MarkdownPaste — Free Markdown to Rich Text & Excel Converter

Runs entirely in your browser

Paste Markdown. Get real formatting in Word, Gmail, Docs, Notion — and Excel.

AI assistants answer in Markdown. Word processors, email clients and spreadsheets don't read Markdown, so **bold**, ## and | pipes land as literal symbols. This converter parses your Markdown, shows a live preview, and puts properly formatted rich text — or Excel-ready TSV — on your clipboard.

  • No upload, no backend, no account
  • Works offline — zero external dependencies
  • Instant live preview
  • Tables → Excel & Google Sheets

Markdown converter

Type or paste Markdown on the left. The preview on the right is what gets copied as rich text. If your Markdown contains a table, the TSV output for spreadsheets appears below the preview.

Ready. Nothing has been sent anywhere — parsing happens in this tab.

Rich-text clipboard writes (text/html) require a secure HTTPS context and browser support that is still inconsistent. Where it isn't available, this tool copies plain text and shows the manual-copy fallback above. That's an expected platform limitation, not a fault in the conversion.

What it does

One pass over your Markdown produces three usable outputs: a formatted preview, an HTML clipboard payload, and tab-separated values for spreadsheets.

Full everyday Markdown

Headings H1–H6, paragraphs, bold, italic, strikethrough, ordered and unordered lists including nesting, links, blockquotes, inline code, fenced code blocks, horizontal rules, tables and backslash-escaped characters.

Rich text for Word, Gmail, Docs, Notion

Copy writes an HTML flavor and a plain-text flavor to the clipboard at the same time, so the destination app can take the richest version it understands and fall back gracefully if it can't.

Tables to Excel and Sheets

Every Markdown table becomes clean TSV: one line per row, a tab between cells, inline formatting reduced to text, stray tabs and line breaks removed so columns don't shift.

Parsed and sanitized properly

Markdown is parsed by marked 12.0.2 and the HTML is cleaned by DOMPurify 3.1.6 — both inlined in this page, so nothing is fetched at runtime. Scripts, inline event handlers and javascript: URLs are stripped; links get rel="noopener noreferrer".

Local files, local downloads

Load a .md or .markdown file from your device with the file picker; export the result as a standalone HTML document or back out as Markdown. Both downloads are generated in the browser.

Keyboard and screen-reader friendly

Every control is a real button with a visible focus ring, status messages are announced politely, section changes move focus to the new heading, and motion respects prefers-reduced-motion.

How it works

Markdown is a plain-text convention: **bold** means bold only to software that has been told to interpret it. Word, Gmail and Google Docs don't interpret it — they look at what flavors the clipboard is offering and prefer text/html. So the fix isn't a smarter paste, it's putting real HTML on the clipboard in the first place.

  1. Paste or load MarkdownType it, paste it from an AI chat, or open a local .md file. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. Parse and sanitizemarked converts Markdown to HTML; DOMPurify removes anything executable before it is rendered or copied.
  3. Check the previewWhat you see in the preview pane is exactly the HTML that goes on the clipboard.
  4. Copy where you need it“Copy Rich Text” for documents and email; “Copy for Excel” to paste table rows straight into spreadsheet cells.

Rich text vs. plain text

Plain text is characters only. Rich text carries structure — a heading is a heading, a list is a list. On the clipboard these travel as separate flavors of the same copy, which is why one copy can paste formatted in Word and unformatted in a code editor.

Why TSV for spreadsheets

Excel and Google Sheets split pasted text on tab characters into columns and on newlines into rows. TSV avoids CSV's quoting problems with commas inside cells, so a Markdown table maps cleanly onto a cell range.

Where results can differ

Destination apps re-interpret pasted HTML their own way: Notion may map headings to its own blocks, Gmail keeps basic inline styles, Google Docs normalizes fonts. Structure survives; exact styling may not.

Privacy by architecture, not by promise

This page has no backend. There is no server that could receive your Markdown, no database, no account system, and no analytics that read your content. Parsing, sanitizing, preview rendering, TSV conversion, clipboard writes and file downloads all execute in your browser tab. Close the tab and the content is gone; nothing persists server-side because there is no server side.

The Markdown parser and the HTML sanitizer are bundled inside the page itself, so the converter makes no third-party requests at all and keeps working with no internet connection. The only external request this site can make is the Google AdSense script, and only once the publisher inserts a real AdSense ID. Details, including cookie and advertising disclosures, are in the Privacy Policy.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my formatting break when I paste Markdown into Word or Gmail?

Word, Gmail and Google Docs do not interpret Markdown syntax. They read the clipboard's rich text (text/html) flavor. When you copy raw Markdown you are copying plain text, so asterisks, hashes and pipes are pasted literally. This tool parses the Markdown first and puts real HTML on the clipboard, so the destination app receives headings, bold text, lists and tables instead of symbols.

Is my content uploaded anywhere?

No. Parsing, sanitization, preview, TSV conversion and downloads all happen in your browser with JavaScript. The page has no backend, no database and no content analytics, and your Markdown is never sent over the network.

Does “Copy Rich Text” work in every browser?

No, and that is an expected limitation rather than a bug. Writing text/html to the clipboard uses the asynchronous Clipboard API, which requires a secure HTTPS context, a user gesture, and browser support for the text/html clipboard flavor. Support and paste fidelity also vary by destination app. When a rich-text write is not possible the tool falls back to a selectable HTML block you can copy manually.

How does the Excel conversion work?

Markdown tables are converted to TSV: each table row becomes a line, each cell is separated by a tab character, inline Markdown such as bold or links is reduced to its text, and tabs, carriage returns and newlines inside cells are stripped so columns stay aligned. Excel and Google Sheets split tab-separated clipboard text into columns automatically.

What is the difference between rich text and plain text?

Plain text is characters only. Rich text carries structure and styling, and on the clipboard it travels as an HTML payload alongside a plain-text fallback. Applications pick the richest flavor they understand, which is why the same copy action can paste as formatted text in Word and as plain text in a code editor.

Is HTML inside my Markdown safe?

Markdown is parsed with the marked library and the resulting HTML is sanitized with DOMPurify before it is inserted into the page or written to the clipboard. Scripts, event handler attributes and javascript: URLs are removed, and surviving links get rel="noopener noreferrer" and target="_blank".

Can I use it offline?

Yes. The Markdown parser (marked 12.0.2) and the HTML sanitizer (DOMPurify 3.1.6) are inlined in the page, so there are no runtime downloads. Save index.html to your device, open it in a browser, and everything except clipboard rich-text copy works without a connection — clipboard writes need a secure context, so a local file may fall back to manual copy.
