How to Convert Markdown Tables to Excel
Transform Markdown tables into spreadsheet-ready data. Copy TSV output and paste directly into Excel or Google Sheets with perfect cell alignment.
The problem: Markdown tables use pipe characters (|) and dashes to create structure. Excel doesn't understand this syntax — it expects tab-separated values. A straight copy-paste from a Markdown table dumps all the symbols into a single cell instead of creating rows and columns.
The solution: Convert the Markdown table to TSV (Tab-Separated Values) before pasting. That's exactly what the MarkdownPaste converter does with its "Copy for Excel" feature.
What you'll need
- A Markdown table (from an AI assistant, documentation, or your own notes)
- A browser tab open to markdownpaste.online
- Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or another spreadsheet application
No account, no extension and no install required.
The workflow
1. Copy your Markdown table
From your AI chat (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini), documentation, or notes, copy the Markdown table. It looks like this:
Select the table text and copy it with Ctrl+C (or Cmd+C on Mac).
2. Open MarkdownPaste
Navigate to markdownpaste.online in your browser. The converter loads instantly — no sign-up required.
3. Paste into the Markdown input
Click into the left panel labeled "MARKDOWN INPUT" and paste with Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V). The right panel instantly shows a rendered preview of your table.
4. Click "Copy for Excel"
Below the preview, you'll see two buttons:
- Copy Rich Text — for Word, Google Docs, Gmail
- Copy for Excel — for spreadsheets ← Click this one
When you click "Copy for Excel", MarkdownPaste converts your table to TSV format and writes it to your clipboard.
5. Open Excel or Google Sheets
Switch to your spreadsheet application and click on the cell where you want the top-left corner of your table to appear.
6. Paste
Press Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V). Excel automatically splits the tab-separated values into individual cells, creating a properly formatted table.
7. Verify and format
Check that:
- All columns are in separate cells (not merged)
- All rows are on separate lines
- Headers are in the correct row
- Numbers and dates are formatted as needed
Apply Excel formatting (borders, colors, number formats) as desired.
Before and after
Here's the difference between pasting Markdown directly versus using MarkdownPaste:
| Product | Price | Stock |
|---------|-------|-------|
| Widget A | $12.99 | 150 |
| Widget B | $24.99 | 75 |
Result: All text lands in one cell with pipe characters and dashes visible.
| Product | Price | Stock |
|---|---|---|
| Widget A | $12.99 | 150 |
| Widget B | $24.99 | 75 |
Result: Clean table with proper cells, no Markdown symbols.

Common problems and solutions
Problem: Columns are misaligned or merged
Cause: The Markdown table has inconsistent column counts or missing pipes.
Solution: Ensure every row has the same number of columns. Each row should start and end with a pipe character (|).
Problem: Cell content contains line breaks
Cause: Multi-line content in Markdown table cells.
Solution: MarkdownPaste strips line breaks from cells to prevent column shifting. If you need multi-line content, add it manually in Excel after pasting (Alt+Enter for line break in a cell).
Problem: Numbers formatted as text
Cause: Excel interprets certain values as text instead of numbers or dates.
Solution: Select the column, go to Data → Text to Columns, and specify the format. Or use Excel's NUMBERVALUE() function to convert.
Problem: Special characters cause issues
Cause: Tabs or unusual characters in cell content.
Solution: MarkdownPaste automatically removes tabs and normalizes line breaks. If problems persist, check for unusual Unicode characters.
Problem: Empty cells not preserved
Cause: Missing pipes between empty cells.
Solution: Use | | or || to indicate empty cells. Example: | Product | Price | | (empty Stock column).
Problem: Formatting doesn't match Excel defaults
Cause: TSV only transfers data, not styling.
Solution: Apply Excel formatting after paste: borders, cell colors, number formats, date formats, etc. The structure is preserved; styling must be applied in Excel.
Why TSV works for Excel
Excel and Google Sheets automatically split pasted text based on delimiters:
- Tab character → separates columns
- Newline → separates rows
TSV (Tab-Separated Values) is perfect for this because:
- Tabs rarely appear in normal text content
- Unlike commas (CSV), tabs don't conflict with decimal points or list items
- Excel recognizes tab-delimited data and auto-splits it
- No quoting or escaping needed for most content
MarkdownPaste converts your Markdown table by:
- Removing the pipe characters (
|) - Replacing them with tab characters
- Stripping the separator line (
|---|---|) - Converting inline formatting (
**bold**,*italic*) to plain text - Removing any tabs or line breaks within cells
Good to know
- Privacy: Nothing is uploaded. All processing happens in your browser.
- Works offline: Once loaded, MarkdownPaste works without an internet connection.
- Google Sheets compatible: The same TSV format works in Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, and LibreOffice Calc.
- Large tables: Supports tables of any size, though very large tables (1000+ rows) may take a moment to process.
- Inline formatting: Bold, italic, links, and code in table cells are converted to plain text.
- Headers preserved: The first row of your Markdown table becomes the header row in Excel.

Yes. Google Sheets handles TSV the same way Excel does. Click "Copy for Excel" and paste into Google Sheets — the tab-separated values will automatically split into columns.
Markdown tables don't support merged cells or complex formatting. MarkdownPaste converts each cell to plain text. For complex tables, you'll need to manually adjust the structure in Excel after pasting.
MarkdownPaste processes one table at a time. If your Markdown contains multiple tables, copy and convert them separately, then paste each into different areas of your spreadsheet.
TSV is plain text format. Excel can't apply rich text formatting to individual cells from TSV data. If you need formatted cells, use "Copy Rich Text" and paste into Excel, but note that this may not split into columns as cleanly as TSV.
Select the pasted column, go to Data → Text to Columns, choose "Delimited", click Next, check "Tab" as the delimiter, and click Finish. This manually triggers the split that should happen automatically.
You could, but you'd get all the pipe characters and separator lines as text. You'd then need to manually clean up the formatting. MarkdownPaste automates this conversion so you get clean, ready-to-use data.
Yes. The converter runs in any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) on any operating system. The TSV clipboard format is universally supported.
Markdown doesn't support formulas. If you paste text that looks like a formula (e.g., =A1+B1), it will be pasted as plain text. Excel may interpret it as a formula after paste, which is usually what you want.
